    • EASTER 2022 LETTER

      St. Patrick Church

      Dear Friends:

Between the Fifth Sunday of Lent and the Easter Vigil, the Church covers all images in purple cloth. This ancient custom expresses two things: mourning and hope. We mourn the sufferings endured by Christ. But we also cling to hope. How? By always remembering the beautiful images that abide beneath the shrouds.

At the present moment, purple shrouds appear everywhere:

      • The endless images that come from the burning cities and towns of Ukraine cover over the goodness of humanity.

      • For more than two years, Covid-19 restrictions have shrouded our loved ones and parishioners, especially the dying and home bound.

      • For many people, the Eucharist is now shrouded behind flickering images on phones and television screens.

We must acknowledge that the presence of these shrouds has changed us all. Even as Covid-19 subsides, the backwash of loneliness and isolation continue to pull many people away from joy and hope. Christian hope, rooted in the Easter Event, acts as the greatest antidote to doom and gloom. This hope expresses our total confidence that the Lord’s ways will surely prevail. Hope pulls us into the future and away from darkness.

As we approach the celebration of Easter, we look forward to lifting the shrouds and seeing again the faces of Christ, Mary, St. Joseph, and St. Patrick — old statues that have adorned our sanctuary for over a century. And we also now see the unmasked faces of so many people who support our parish and worship here.

Easter is about transformation and change. We see this especially in our facilities. The massive “repurposing” of our old school moves along quickly as the old building gradually evolves into a safe, clean, and pleasant home for about 40 people. At the same time, the renovation of our Parish Center will soon be completed. Already we have hosted many activities, many of which benefit the broader community, especially those in need.  By doing this we fulfill the desire of Christ: Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters, you do unto me.

Thanks to everyone who keeps us going — those who worship weekly, those who bring food for people in need, those who clean and decorate our church, those who teach our youngsters, and those whose simple and hidden goodness flows into our parish. Thanks also for your financial support. Your generosity allows me to be a priest, free from endless fundraising and anxiety. Thank you! Through you, God provides all that we truly need.

                                                                                         Fr Michael Kerper
